Role Outline

Internships are an ideal way of entering an industry but also a great opportunity to gain hands on experience. You can gain relevant experience for your academic course or determine an interest in a particular field while creating a network of peers, mentors and friends.

Our internship programme is suited to undergraduate students. You will spend 12 weeks gaining hands-on experience working on specific Projects. This is an ideal learning opportunity to compliment your studies – learning closely from our multi-skilled teams, while operating independently in a business environment.

You will be provided with a live business project to lead, own and deliver during the internship. Your day to day tasks will vary, and you’ll receive support from a number of skilled professionals within the business, all committed to helping you to deliver your goals.

The projects you work on will support a real business need, you will learn the tools, techniques and approaches used by engineering professionals and apply them in a controlled environment to ensure projects are delivered on time, to quality and to budget.

About You

As an undergraduate, you should be aiming for a 2:1 BSc or MSc in any STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics discipline). Mechanical, Electronic, Mechatronic, Process or Chemical Engineering preferred. Other disciplines will be considered if you are able to demonstrate significant extra-curricular interest in Engineering principles.

You must be confident, analytical, enthusiastic and well-organised. Flexibility, good communication skills (enjoy talking to people face to face or over the phone and building relationships) and the ability to work under pressure to achieve demanding objectives are all essential skills for this position. You will also have a high degree of initiative, collaboration and be an excellent team player.

You should have a proven academic track record, with excellent references to boot! It is essential that all applicants have a high level of general education along with GCSE qualifications in Mathematics and English Language at grade C or above.

Projects – one Intern per area

Information Systems Department

Support with triaging and resolving first line support tickets, following hundreds of new PC’s that are being built & rolled out. Will also include “hypercare” post roll out

Quality Assurance

To work alongside our experienced CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) operator. You would be validating measurement on precision metal and optical components and potentially sub-assemblies, learning to operate CMM and other calibration equipment to verify finished parts to drawing requirements.

You will learn how to set up and calibrate the CMM, assessing the CMM programmes, amending CMM programmes and eventually learning the capability to right new programmes for the machines.

You will also learn to interpret complex engineering drawings, building First Article Inspection packs, evaluating errors from program results, validation of ‘first off’ machining operations to ensure positional and characteristic conformity of part finished products.

EHS

We currently have around 400 COSHH assessments that require reviewing / updating.

You will be mapping of substance usage across the site, identifying obsolete substances on inventory list, obtaining updated SDS’s for active substances and reviewing and transferring of COSHH assessments into new template and new format of substance only

Test Engineering

· Characterisation of all thermal chambers ESS profiles

Knowledge of the capability of the chambers relative to the requested profiles in the TMs is not documented.

Profiles are currently not consistent with the TMs and the ability of operators to select the correct profile is hampered by the naming conventions. You would verify profiles are consistent to the TMs and establish that the chambers are capable of running the profiles.

· Camera angular calibration

Many of the newer test benches are replacing theodolites with cameras. This has significant benefits in managing bench availability and reducing costs. There are several options relating to the method of calibrating the performance of the cameras to ensure the suitability for the application. You would compare the methods to provide data allowing an assessment of calibration accuracy vs cost/time.

· Thermal camera calibration throughput improvements

Many thermal weapon sights require a calibration routine to ensure that the performance is optimised within the optomechanical environment. This process is problematic in production with frequent failures and increased cycle time compared to the ideal process. You would look at the differences in implementation between the FLIR GUI and the QUK GUI. The output would ideally be improvements in robustness of the camera calibration implementation.
